Need a Hand?
It takes good hands to build fine boats. That was true for wooden boats when Richard Ryder, owner of Union River Boat Co,
began building juniper dories on Hatteras Island in 1977 and it's still true for the fiberglass boats, molds, hulls, decks, and
components he and his 25-person crew build now in Downeast Maine.
Of course, the advantage of composite molding is that you can use good work many times over. A well-crafted mold, properly
used and maintained, should provide fine parts for many years. Some of the molds that Union River Boat Company built for The
Hinckley Company were used for fifteen years, producing over 350 parts. The molds were retired only when the product line
was retired.
Customers of all sizes have found that Union River Boat's flexibility and willingness to work with them have made out-sourcing
their composite work a pleasure. Classic Boat Shop builds 4-7 Pisces 21 sailboats per year. They turned to URB to build their
hulls. Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding needed sole panels for their 94’ motoryacht. URB built a 24’ x 18’ lay-up table to infuse the 1
1/2” thick panels. URB has since built bulkheads, sole panels, diesel fuel tank panels, and hull molds for several other Lyman-
Morse projects.
Customer loyalty has kept our doors open from the beginning and we strongly believe it is the key to our future. In the fall of
2003, Morris Yachts started work on the M36 Daysailer project. They wanted a local tooling shop to build their new M36 hull
and deck molds and awarded the job to Union River Boat. They built their own deck plug on the Morris campus and URB sent a
crew down to build the mold. The carved hull plug made the trip to URB’s shop where the mold was built. Well-pleased with
the results of the first collaboration Morris returned to URB for the tooling on their M42 Weekender project and most recently
for their M52 .

is the Presto 30. A new and distinctive boat
they commissioned Rodger Martin to
design. After the construction and launch of
boat #1, Richard and his daughter Belle
founded a new company, Ryder Boats, to
market and sell the Presto 30. This new
company will be the public face of the
Presto 30. Look for Ryder Boats at the boat
